2017 was a year full of milestones and beautiful flute music for the Hawaii Flute Society. Take a look back at how far we've come as we look forward to more great music making in the future!
January 2017
- Our Board of Directors met for the first time with the goal of promoting flute music and flute playing in Hawaii.
- Our first blog post: "Hawaii's 18th Annual Christmas Flute Choir"
March 2017
- HFS hosted our first flute choir reading at 'Iolani School Band Room. 25 local flutists joined us.
June 2017
- Hawaii Flute Society, Inc. was formed in the State of Hawaii with the mission of continuing the legacy of Honolulu Symphony Principal Flutist and educator, Jean Harling (1923-2016), by:
- nurturing the talents of Hawaii’s flutists of all ages and abilities through educational programs and ensemble playing.
- creating more performance opportunities for Hawaii’s flutists ranging from formal concerts to community outreach at our local community centers, hospitals, care homes and schools.
- engaging the greater Hawaii community while promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation for flute music and music in general.
- HFS presented Hawaii Flute Week that included a masterclass with HSO flutist, Susan McGinn, a competition for student performers and a public concert featuring solo and flute choir performances and over 30 participating flutists. View the program
September 2017
- Hawaii Flute Society completed our first-ever membership drive. Our membership is made up of flutists of all ages and abilities, including students, adult amateurs and professionals. We are currently 43, and growing!

October 2017
- Hawaii Flute Society, Inc's application for non-profit status under the IRS's 501(c)(3) code was approved on October 30, 2017.
- Legendary flutist Paula Robison shared her insights into Carmen, the opera, and Borne's "Carmen Fantasy" in an exclusive interview for the HFS blog.
November 2017
- Hawaii Flute Society presented a Fall Recital at Honolulu's Studio 909. This concert featured solo and small flute ensemble performances by our members.

- HFS board member, Lance Suzuki, gave a lecture-masterclass entitled "Re-Imagining Syrinx" at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
December 2017
- HFS presented Hawaii's largest flute choir ever in the 19th Annual Christmas Flute Choir concert at Kahala Mall. 55 flutists participated in this popular program.
