Caren started playing the flute in the 9th grade, taking lessons that summer from Jean Harling. At the University of Hawaii, she majored in elementary education with a minor in music, where she continued lessons with Mrs. Harling. After almost 30 years of not playing her flute, Caren was convinced to join a community band. Since then, she continues to play with two community bands, and a community orchestra as well as flute ensembles. Thanks to Aileen Kawakami, Caren discovered the alto and bass flutes. Recently retired from the U.S. Department of Justice, Caren is eager to be one of the founding members of the Flute Society, providing others the opportunity to enjoy music and flute playing.
